14th Conference on Child Sexual Abuse Online

The 14th Conference on Child Sexual Abuse Online took place on September 30, 2024, from 9.00 AM to 2.00 PM. The annual conference aims to unite professionals from various fields who may encounter online child sexual abuse in their line of work. This includes individuals in law enforcement agencies, the legal system, non-governmental organizations, legislative bodies, school counselling, education, and social work.

This year the conference looked at some of the risk factors for sexual exploitation on the internet and the psychological impact of online sexual abuse on children. It attracted over 500 participants, setting a record, with the majority joining online. The conference recording is available at the Spletno oko YouTube channel.

The program included three lectures in English:

  • Catherine Knibbs, a Clinical Doctoral Researcher, Consultant, Public Speaker, Author, and Child Trauma Psychotherapist who specializes in Cybertrauma presented what the signs of various kinds of cybertrauma are and how to support children suffering from them. She emphasized that professionals should approach victims of sexual abuse online with sensitivity to the trauma caused and an awareness of the strategies often used to limit feelings of shame.
  • Boris Radanović from the UK's Safer Internet Centre highlighted some of the risk factors for child sexual abuse on the internet and the StopNCII.org tool that can help victims of abuse to remove intimate images from the internet. He also discussed ways to bridge the gap between children and online safety by becoming proactive digital role models, highlighting non-judgmental communication and education.
  • Niels Van Paemel, Policy Advisor at Child Focus, the Belgian Foundation for Missing and Sexually Exploited Children pointed out that in a world where distinguishing between true and false is increasingly difficult, there are inherent risks of the use of AI to facilitate online sexual abuse. He explained how artificial intelligence, and deepnudes specifically, are changing the landscape of online sexual abuse.
